Bus station to receive new signage. Wednesday, 28 October 2009 The Spalding Bus station will receive new signage shortly showing which operators run from each stand and also a basic layout of the bus station.
This is a great step forward and our thanks go out to SHDC who have acted swiftly to our concerns over the lack of signage. Government response to petition We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to act upon the EDM on 23rd March put up by Tom Harris MP, former Transport Minister, in support of railway enthusiasts.” Details of Petition: “Details of Early Day Motion: That this House welcomes the presence and activities of railway enthusiasts on the UK rail network; acknowledges the potential positive contribution to station security made by railway enthusiasts who are often seen as providing extra eyes and ears for the security services through their activities; is concerned at recent reports that some rail enthusiasts have been prevented from carrying out lawful activities, including photography, by station and train staff; and calls on Network Rail and the train operating companies to respect the legal rights of members of the public to pursue their interests at stations.” Read the Government’s response Network Rail, the British Transport Police and some train operators have policies in place that recognise the security benefits that the presence of enthusiasts can bring to the railway. The Government also recognises this and agrees that extra security at stations should not prevent enthusiasts from pursuing their legitimate interests. Enthusiasts are asked to make their presence known to station staff so as to avoid the sort of confrontation described in the petition. Railway enthusiasts are subject to the same rules as anyone else using the railway and so must not, for example, trespass on parts of the railway that are not open to the general public. However, there may be occasions when staff seek to remove enthusiasts. Where there are good reasons for this, for example when there is a particular security threat, the staff concerned should be ready and able to explain the reasons. Otherwise, Network Rail and the British Transport Police provide a summary of their relevant policies on their website and recommend that enthusiasts take a copy to show staff should they be challenged. Bridge hope for street rail line Thursday, 22 October 2009 A footbridge could be built over the level crossing in Lincoln's High Street as part of a major revamp. Network Rail has indicated it has a "significant sum of money" to upgrade the line through the city. The county council has said this may well include the footbridge, along with a wider scheme to extend an existing pedestrianised area. Despite no plans having been agreed, the authority said there was an "active dialogue" on starting the project. The barriers come down regularly throughout the day and some businesses say footfall can be blocked for up to 15 minutes an hour. Air pollution Lincolnshire County Council's executive member for highways and transport, councillor William Webb, said he expected the city council and businesses to be involved. "We would like to see the congestion in the upper High Street, north of the level crossing, solved if we possibly could. "We are talking, very productively, about how they would like to route buses in the future in and around that area. "It would be an aspiration, but currently no more than that, to extend the pedestrianised area, down to the level crossing." He admitted the current situation was harming the area. "We can't quantify this but we do think a lot of people are put off using the shopping areas in that part of the city centre by the congestion and air pollution." Questions? Tuesday, 20 October 2009 Can you let us know where you would like to see secure locking places for your bicycles around the town? We have identified one place at the railway station where additional lockers would be an advantage but we would like to know where you would like additional places. Would you also like to see more information about car sharing, more cycle information? Contact us and let us know. Bus station signage SHDC have agreed that new signs will be shortly pointing the way to the Bus Station. We have also requested the bus stops be clearly signed as to where the buses are going to.
