The Conservative Approach to the Railways
Theresa Villiers MP
Wednesday 13th January 6.30pm

In the run up to the next general election, the future of transport has become particularly important to the voters. Whatever the mode – air, road, rail – there are problems of reliability, cost and the implications for our environment. Already, Politeia's On Track series has heard from the industry's leaders on the issues at the heart of the debate about present arrangements such as:

  • Is the present system best for operating the railways?
  • How should the Network be governed?
  • How can passengers count on greater reliability and efficiency? Should they have their own champion?
  • What of the train operators? Should their franchises be reviewed more regularly or extended?
  • What remit should there be for rail regulation?
  • What role will the High Speed Rail Project play?

On January 13th 2010, Theresa Villiers MP, Shadow Transport Secretary, discussed The Conservative Approach to the Railways in Politeia's Winter Address. She set out Conservative thinking on the future of the railways as the country prepares for the general election.
The Address took place at 6.30pm on Wednesday 13th January 2010.

    * Theresa Villiers MP is Shadow Secretary of State for Transport. She has served as Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury and Deputy Chairman of the Conservative Party in the European Parliament.
